Can the Race Timer and Speedometer datalink with Chromebooks?
The Race Timer and Speedometer is a self contained unit that just needs a USB power supply to work. The enhanced datalink version can also run completely self-contained, or send data to a connected computer via the USB cable. The only difference is that a computer needs to be on the other end of the USB cable. This computer/Chromebook needs to be able to read a serial USB connection at 57600 baud and have a terminal emulator that will translate this data into ASCII characters. The data is transmitted from the Race Timer and Speedometer in a basic format which should be easily read by any terminal program once the data connection properties are set up in an App. Instructions for downloading and using PuTTY (a free terminal emulation program) with Win10 are provided with the unit. The data output from the Serial Terminal is then copied to the application that you wish to process the data on (document, spreadsheet etc).
I have had a quick search on google to see if terminal emulators are available on Chromebook. The good news is there are Apps available and the Chromebook is able to read serial data via a USB cable. So the data could be read by a Chromebook.
I don’t have access to a Chromebook, so cannot confirm how effective these terminal Apps are and how difficult they may be to set up. However, I would expect that there would be a settings page to set up the connection speed and the data format, stop bits, parity etc. If you are interested in this feature, then I suggest that you research the type of App needed and it’s compatibility with your Chromebook. Confirm that your Chromebook has the ability to read serial data over USB and download a suitable Serial Terminal App. As I don’t have a Chromebook, I am afraid that I cannot provide specific guidance on how to setup and use the data on a Chromebook.
Perhaps someone with experience of using Chromebooks can post further help in the comments section?
